Helping Refugees Grow Gardens

Tara Swartzendruber-Landis ('95) directs a senior center for immigrants and refugees in Philadelphia, Pa. Many of the senior adults that she works with were farmers earlier in their lives, but have not been able to use their gifts of growing food since coming to Philadelphia--where tillable land is scare. However, that has changed. In 2010 Tara applied for and received a grant for $27,000 to build a garden for senior refugees at a church willing to provide space.
