The Globe (WGCS) Nation's Best
Trisha Handrich ('07) student station manager
Goshen College's student-run radio station, WGCS 91.1 The Globe, was selected as the nation's best college station at the March 12 Intercollegiate Broadcasting Systems' annual conference, competing against more than 700 colleges and universities.
Trisha Handrich ('07), aka Sadie Kruise, is the student station manager, and Tony Miller ('10) is a member of her staff. Trisha says, "The award took all the effort of my current staff, but also all the hard work previous grads put into the station as well. I am very proud to be a part of the Globe's present, soon history, and hopefully a model for the future."
Trisha began working for the station during the summer following her junior year at Bethany. Trisha recalls listening to WGCS as a young child and created her own radio station, recording songs and interviews with her family on a tape recorder. Her experience working at the station during high school prompted her to enroll at GC and major in communication, where she has hosted Breakfast Blend, the station's morning show, for four years.
In addition to the station's overall award, individual students won awards as well, including Trisha, who placed first for the best promotional series.
Jason Samuel, the station's general manager and GC communication professor, first hired Trisha and has served as her mentor since. He calls the Globe a living laboratory where students learn--and make mistakes--but become very marketable. And this recognition helps substantiate that reality.
