Spike the Cure
Athletes support breast cancer awareness
Goshen and Bethany volleyball teams collaborated for the second year to support breast cancer awareness by designating their game as Spike the Cure Night. All gate receipts, concession money, donations, and T-shirt proceeds from the Oct. 5 contest at Bethany were donated to Elkhart County organizations that help fight breast cancer. About $3,000 was raised. In addition to T-shirts purchased by fans, both teams wore pink and white uniforms (donated by a local family).
The girls basketball team also participated in the fight against breast cancer by participating in the Middlebury 5K run/walk for a cure on Oct. 3. Coach Krysten Parson (KP) said, "Since most of my players know a breast cancer survivor or someone who has breast cancer, I thought it would be something fun to do. No one had to do it, but they all willingly agreed. The team was joined by some mothers, siblings, and friends--some of whom are breast cancer survivors.
The cross country teams, also coached by KP, also decided to participate in supporting the fight against cancer, by purchasing T-shirts from the volleyball teams and wearing them in the match on Oct. 5 as well.
