Color Outside the Lines

Emmaus, 6 p.m. May 22

Bethany's performing arts troupe, Emmaus, will present its final public performance at 6 p.m. Sunday, May 22, in the school chapel.

The theme of their program is “Color Outside the Lines,” which is inspired by Harry Chapin's song "Flowers Are Red." The program also includes adaptations of other previously-recorded songs such as John McCutcheon's "SuAnne Big Crow" and Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors," as well as original songs and skits.

Director Talashia Keim Yoder describes the program: "The program begins with a piece that represents the status quo--it's nice to watch, but not particularly exciting or colorful. The program then transitions into stories of people just being themselves and celebrates the freedom that can come with being who God created us to be. The program concludes with a series of pieces that celebrate what happens when we each contribute who we are to a sense of community."

The troupe will also be participating at the Mennonite Church USA convention in Pittsburgh in July. The group will open the initial joint worship service (including children, youth, and adults) with a STOMP-style dance. They will also perform a country line dance at a youth worship service and do a coffeehouse for a late-night activity. Several members will be assisting Talashia Keim Yoder in leading four seminars.

Troupe members include: Jesse Bontreger, Sara Erb, Sadie Gustafson-Zook, Ben Mast, Chris Minter, Lucas Morgan, Anna Nafziger, Emily Shenk, Blake Shetler, and Leslie Weaver. The group is taught and directed by Talashia Keim Yoder.
