2011 County HOF Induction

in

Gary Chupp ('87) and Eliot Friesen ('97)
will be inducted into the Elkhart County Sports Hall of Fame on Nov. 12 as part of the class of 2011. The ceremonies include a 6:30 p.m. meal followed by the induction program. Tickets are $20 and available for purchase from Kevin Miller at the school.

Gary Chupp: His two most memorable moments in sport come from his days at Bethany, but in strikingly different ways: 1) the joy that led to a team pile-up after he scored the winning run in a seven-run last inning rally against Goshen for Bethany's first-ever baseball sectional championship and 2) disappointment after missing his attempt at 63 consecutive free throws, one short of the then state record 64 held by Indiana hoops legend Steve Alford.

Not surprising Gary holds the school record for best free throw percentage for a season (92%) and career (88%). His 472 points as a senior is the second-best at Bethany and in just two years on varsity he scored a total of 814 points, which is sixth on the career charts. In addition to his 2 letters in basketball he lettered four times in baseball.

Gary has been the men's basketball coach at Goshen College since 2007. He and his wife Melissa have three children and attend Waterford Mennonite Church.

Eliot holds master degrees in education (New York University, 2005) and education and ethics (Harvard University 2007) and teaches English at Harold Washington College in downtown Chicago. He and his wife Carrie Friesen-Meyers became parents in July with the birth of their daughter Catherine Grace.
