Conservation Teacher of the Year
Amy Thut
has been named Elkhart County Conservation Teacher of the Year for her hands-on approach to teaching environmental science. Amy, Bethany's biology and environmental science teacher, received the honor from the Elkhart County Soil and Water Conservation District at its annual meeting March 1.
Amy's curriculum provides students with opportunities to practice conservation techniques they learn about. Activities include participating in the Hoosier Riverwatch water monitoring, landfill visits, Adopt-a-Road roadside cleanup, and river cleanup at Baintertown Dam. Through her leadership with the school's Ecology Club, students have hosted a Ride-a-Bike-to-School Day, river cleanup with Elkhart EnviroCorps, volunteering at the Merry Lea Enchanted Forest, and running a booth at Goshen's Diversity Day.
Bethany frosh Hannah Johnson, whose poster on Conservation's Power won the state award earlier this year, says, "Amy has a great way of teaching that helps us learn about the environment and why it matters in our life."
Outside the classroom Amy is active in the Elkhart River Alliance's efforts to improve water quality and serves on the Mennonite Creation Care Council.
