Job Shadowing

One of the program innovations for this school year was increasing the senior job shadowing experience from one day to one week to allow seniors to more meaningfully engage and explore prospective vocations. Each student earned .5 credit by fulfilling course requirements and individual objectives. Students found the week to be extremely beneficial. Adult mentors consistently offered high praise for the program itself and for the effort and learning of the students. Some even offered students ongoing job opportunities!

Reflections 2010

Teaching

Teaching has rewards that are rarely seen through the eyes of a student. I realized that I often need to express God’s love to kids who look up to me. I enjoy knowing that through my walk with God, some of my students could potentially find him. I never expected to find a strong joy in teaching or to discover so strongly that teaching allows me to live out my gifts.

On my last day of shadowing, one shy little girl gave me a hug and soft kiss with the message, “Good-bye. I love you.” With that one kiss, I felt the sheer bliss that made a job I never expected to enjoy one that I will consider for a career. —Kate shadowed an elementary school teacher

Sports Information

God has given me a great gift in the ability to communicate. Reflecting on the week, I see three things about entering a career in sports information that would suit my lifestyle well: 1) it would combine the two manmade things I love the most: sports and information; 2) a schedule that is regular but maintains abnormal hours, and 3) the need to retrieve seemingly minute, irrelevant information at a moment’s notice. —Tony shadowed the sports information director at Goshen College

Pharmacology

Going into the week, I was seriously questioning whether this was the profession God wanted for me as I had been declined acceptance into pharmacy programs at two colleges. However, I definitely felt God at work on my future. On the second day I was offered the possibility of a summer job, and on the third evening I learned of a new pharmacy program that was willing to give me money to attend! This is when I knew God had opened a huge door for me, right when I was doubting what I was supposed to do. I realized again that God works on his own time and he will make it happen; I just need to be patient. A few weeks later I was accepted into Duquesne University’s Mylan School of Pharmacy—Sydney shadowed at CVS Pharmacy.

Bicycle Repair

“I think God is helping me see that I don’t need a lot of money to be happy, but to find something I’m passionate about. This job seemed like a good fit, though I would need to grow as a sales person. I like working with my hands. I appreciated the sense of accomplishment from completing an overhaul of a bike. It really did feel like I had completed a work of art. I also learned that in running a business there is no room for cutting corners. ” —John shadowed at Family Bicycle Center

Nursing

I learned that nursing is more complicated than it looks. However, I’m excited that I can make a real difference. I think God wants me not only to be a nurse, but to become fluent in Spanish so I can serve Spanish-speaking people too. This week helped me feel more confident to major in a subject in which I had no prior experience. —Marissa shadowed several nurses in the emergency department of Goshen General Hospital.
