Students Interviewed on German TV
Civil Rights in Mississippi J-Term students were interviewed by a German TV program (www.weltspiegel.de) while they were visiting with Philadephia, Miss., mayor James Young. Students were visiting Philadelphia, Mississippi, which is known for one of the more infamous race-related crimes in American history. The 1964 murder of three civil rights workers by white supremacists inspired the 1988 movie Mississippi Burning.
The interview took place while the students were visiting with James Young, who was talking about how he became the first African-American mayor in a town known worldwide for racism. Students were interviewed to get an American perspective on what they heard from Mayor Young and the significance of the election. Unfortunately the interviews were cut from the final release.
